Another nonfiction pick for us this time, detailing the grotesque underbelly of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair - The Devil in the White City follows the horrific deeds of America’s first recorded serial killer, H.H. Holmes. Veteran storyteller and author of Thunderstruck and The Demon of Unrest, Erik Larson brings readers into the Gilded Age of the late 1800s and unfolds the many goings-on at the 1893 World’s Fair with appearances from historical figures like Buffalo Bill or Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Larson chronicles the lives and deeds that made the Chicago World’s Fair as well as the death and violence that haunted it. A topic not for the faint of heart but endlessly interesting.
