Hi! My name is Jonathan. Welcome back to Abington Public Library for APL Book Bites, a new program here at the APL where we review some of our favorite books and more.
Today, I have something magical to share with you all, a short novella called A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. In a world full of Terminators, Hall 9000s and scary artificial intelligence, A Psalm for the Wild-Built is a refreshing cozy exploration of the importance of helping others and protecting the natural world we all inhabit. If you are a fan of the original Star Trek’s more uneventful episodes focused on exploration and peacekeeping then you will feel right at home in the land of Panga. The story follows a young tea monk and the first robot seen in centuries after the robots gained self-awareness, as they go out into the world in service of others and attempt to understand what people need in a time of peace. This really is an uplifting and comforting read in a time when technology is advancing at a staggering pace. Check out A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Beck Chambers next time you are at the library or even the sequel A Prayer for the Crown-Shy.
