Hi! My name is Jonathan. Welcome back to Abington Public Library for APL Book Bites, a new program here at the APL where we review some of our favorite books and more.
With me today I have brought something new to APL Book Bites, our first nonfiction book review! For Native American Heritage Month I read Redbone: The True Story of a Native American Rock Band by Christian Staebler and Sonia Paoloni and art by Thibault Balahy. If you’ve heard the song Come and Get Your Love on the radio or perhaps the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, you’ve heard the musical stylings of the band Redbone. This graphic biography/journalism piece follows brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas through the stages of their career with Redbone in the 60s and 70s and their lives after the band. The brothers paths’ cross with the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and the American Indian Movement. Staebler and Paoloni This charged story of rock’n’roll and rebellion is supercharged by the phenomenal art by Balahy incorporating various styles, ranging from watercolor and loose linework to more abstract visuals and old school comic book texturing. As like any nonfiction book designed for reading and not archives, this is an incomplete history of the band and what they stood for, but a great jumping off point for anyone interested in music, indigenous history or someone who just wants to read something different and out there.
This has been APL Book Bites, brought to you by the Abington Public Library, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
