Hi! My name is Jonathan. Welcome back to Abington Public Library for APL Book Bites, a new program here at the APL where we review some of our favorite books and more.

This time we are talking about a classic of its genre - Watchmen from the prolific writer, Alan Moore and phenomenal artist Dave Gibbons. A dynamic duo like no other. The version we have on the shelf here is a DC Compact Comics edition which collects all 12 issues of the original 1986 run in one “compact” collection. Watchmen follows an alternate history of the United States in which costumed vigilantes have existed for decades and the story begins when one of the more problematic heroes is murdered in his apartment. The series takes place in the mid-80s and offers an otherworldly take on the Cold War, the Nixon Presidency and the Vietnam War. Watchmen marks a defining moment in comics history as this was one of the first wildly popular comics with mature themes and if you are not a big comics or graphic novels person Zack Snyder directed an adaptation in 2009. Check out Watchmen next time you are in the library or ask about anything similar. You won’t regret it.

This has been APL Book Bites, brought to you by the Abington Public Library. Thanks for spending a moment with us and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
